Navigating the world of mental health services can be daunting, especially if you find yourself without insurance. Many individuals are unsure of their options when it comes to seeking therapy, particularly when it comes to out-of-network and private pay services. This blog post aims to clarify these options, helping you make informed decisions about your mental health care.
What Does Out of Network Mean?
When a provider is considered "out of network," it means that they do not have a contract with your insurance company. For clients with PPO plans, this can still be a viable option. You may be able to receive partial reimbursement for services rendered by an out-of-network provider. However, it’s essential to check with your insurance provider to confirm your out-of-network benefits.
Many clients are surprised to learn that even if they have a PPO plan, they can still access services from out-of-network providers. This flexibility allows for a broader range of therapists and specialties, which can be particularly beneficial for those seeking specific types of therapy.
In-Network Providers
At our practice, we are proud to be in-network with Aetna and Cigna, including their Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). If you have insurance through these providers, you can call member services to check your in-network benefits. This can help you understand your coverage and any potential out-of-pocket costs.
For those with other insurance providers, we are considered out-of-network. This means we do not accept those insurances directly. However, if you have a PPO plan, we can provide you with a monthly receipt known as a "Superbill." You can submit this receipt to your insurance provider for possible reimbursement.
Do You Take Insurance?
We only accept and are in-network with Cigna and Aetna. Unfortunately, we do not accept any other insurance directly. This limitation can be frustrating for some clients, but it’s essential to understand that out-of-network options are still available.
If you are considering therapy but are unsure about your insurance coverage, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly. They can provide you with detailed information about your out-of-network benefits and any potential reimbursement you may receive.
Sliding Scale Opportunities

For those who are uninsured, we offer sliding scale opportunities on a limited basis. Our sliding scale ranges from $95 to $165, making therapy more accessible for those who may not have the financial means to pay full price. This option allows clients to receive the care they need without the burden of high costs.
Sliding scale therapy can be a great way to access mental health services without insurance. It’s important to inquire about availability, as these opportunities may be limited.
Why Choose Private Pay Therapy?
Many clients opt for private pay therapy instead of using their insurance benefits for several reasons:
No Required Diagnosis: When using insurance, a mental health diagnosis is often required. This diagnosis becomes part of your medical record, which some clients prefer to avoid.
Unlimited Sessions: Insurance companies may limit the number of sessions you can have. Private pay allows you to attend as many sessions as you need without worrying about these restrictions.
Couples Therapy: If you are seeking couples therapy, you may not have to worry about whether your insurance will cover it. Private pay gives you the freedom to pursue the therapy you want.
Confidentiality: By choosing private pay, you can keep your health records private. Insurance companies often require access to your health records, which can be a concern for many clients.
Immediate Availability: Private pay clients often have more flexibility in scheduling sessions, allowing you to start your therapeutic journey without delay.
Diverse Therapeutic Options: Private pay therapy can offer a wider range of theories and interventions tailored to meet your specific needs.

Many clients find that working with a therapist privately, without involving insurance, is a more comfortable and effective option. This choice allows for a more personalized approach to therapy, which can lead to better outcomes.
